Square Inc. said Thursday that it would start opening up its hardware to developers for the first time, a move intended to help the company attract larger enterprises as clients.
The new Square SDK Reader tools will allow for Square’s payment-processing capabilities to be built inside existing, third-party point-of-sale systems. The idea is that, for example, doctors’ offices, with complicated back-office and privacy requirements, have been precluded from conducting their operations via a dedicated Square terminal. Now they’ll still be able to use their existing medical point-of-sale products, but they’ll also have the option to embed Square’s payment-processing capabilities.
